Stepping Away from Religious Righteousness

Scripture for today:

“Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty man glory in his might, nor let the rich man glory in his riches; but let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows Me”

Jeremiah 9:23-24

Do you know God or do you just know about God?

A lot of times when I talk to people about God, I tell them about my daily communication with Him. Sometimes I’ll joke around and try to explain to people how I talk to God as if He was physically sitting in the car with me. Just a few weeks ago, I was driving to Charrolett, NC to visit a friend for her birthday and me and another friend were both stuck in this horrible traffic. I was finally able to get through it and when my friend called to ask me where I was I told him that I was near the exit to getting off at my destination. He talked to me about how he was still stuck in traffic and I told him you better start praying. He laughed and said, “okay key I know and I’ve been praying.” I told Him no, you need to be specific in the same way that I was. You need to ask God to remove whatever it is that is blocking you from your path. Not only do you need to ask but you also have to believe that he will work in your favor. He laughed and was like, ” Okay!”

In using the same scenerio but applying it to different situations, sometimes people don’t understand what I mean when I say that I literally will just talk to God. Sometimes I’ll do it just to test it out and see if He’s really listening. For instance, I remember a while back I was at Chipotle and I had to money to pay for my food but I said to myself, ” hmm I wounder if somebody would be willing to pay for my meal. Lord, if it is feasble for you–let it happen.” Not thinking that it would actually happen but as soon as I was getting ready to pull my card out to pay, a gentlemen behind me told the cashier, ” put her meal on my tab.” Not only did he pay for my food but he also got a drink with my order. Some will say that it was a coincidence but for me it showed me that God is listneing to me. Everytime that I have those simple conversations with God, He’ll surprise me.

The thing that I want people to understand is that God doesnt just want us to be in prayer becasue we are told to do it or because we think its fitting for the situation. God cares more about the relationship that you have with Him than the religous acts that we complete. One thing that my mother has always told me is that, ” you can’t be to heavinly bound or too earthly bound.” As children of Christ we have to find that balance of being both a doer and a hearer of God.

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.  For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;  for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.  But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.”

James 1: 22-25

So my encouragment for you all today is:

Get to a place where you are unashamed. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your confort zone because sometimes it takes for us to be a little crazy in order to get noticed.
